Off the beaten path

I recently had an opportunity to bring a small group of hardy trekkers on an eight day hike through the South Central Andes. This trek combined two magnificent Inca ruins, Choquequirao & Machu Picchu. Choquequirao was known to exist by the Spanish back in the early 1500's, during their brutal conquest of Peru. The site has been excavated and reconstructed in recent years, but has never developed as a tourist destination like Machu Picchu. In fact, during the 8 day trek we only saw a handful of trekkers, it was fantastic. That will all change if the Peruvian government goes ahead with their plans to run a Gondola across the Apurimac River, which will make this area much more accessible. We appreciated being in this area before that change happens
